Je comprends les préoccupations d'adopter un nouveau chien pour votre famille. En tant que mère adoptive, je m'inquiète même des chiens adoptifs que nous choisissons d'amener chez nous. Je dois considérer comment ce chien adoptif réagira avec ma jeune fille et mes deux chiens résidents.
Quand vous êtes prêt à adopter un chien , vous voulez vous assurer que vous le faites correctement. Quelle est la bonne façon d'adopter un chien? Savez-vous que rechercher lors de l'adoption d'un chien ? Y a-t-il une mauvaise façon d'adopter un chien ?

1. Trouver un refuge ou un refuge pour chiens réputé
a. Sites Web d'adoption d'animaux
www.AdoptaPet.com et www.Petfinder.com sont un excellent moyen de commencer, mais ne sont pas votre seule option.
Les chiens répertoriés sur ces sites Web ne sont en aucun cas parrainés par Petfinder ou Adopt-a-Pet. Les sites Web ne sont que des services en ligne que les sauvetages et les refuges utilisent pour que leurs chiens soient facilement répertoriés en ligne et vus par des millions de personnes.

b. Sauvetage local de chiens
Effectuez une recherche rapide sur Google pour sauvetage local pour chiens près de chez moi , et vous serez surpris de toutes vos options.
Pour résumer, faites vos propres recherches et trouvez le refuge ou l'abri qui correspond le mieux à vos besoins . Demandez des recommandations à vos voisins, amis et famille. Regardez les avis en ligne. Ont-ils une licence ? S'agit-il d'une organisation à but non lucratif 501(c)(3) ?
Il existe même des sauvetages spécifiques à une race, ce serait donc une excellente option si vous souhaitez adopter une race particulière. Attendez-vous à ce que ces sauvetages aient des directives plus strictes pour qui ils adopteront. Mais même la société humaine aura parfois un chien de race pure.
c. Éloignez-vous des abris ombragés ou des usines à chiots
C'est malheureux, mais il y a des sauvetages là-bas qui ne sont là que pour l'argent et non pour le bien-être du chien. Ils peuvent avoir un processus d'adoption plus facile, mais ils adoptent également des chiens malades et des chiens qui n'ont pas été évalués pour des problèmes de comportement.
Comment puis-je savoir? Chaque semaine, j'entends des histoires sur des personnes qui adoptent un chien et qui découvrent rapidement que le chien est malade et atteint de parvo, qu'il est agressif en laisse ou qu'il a d'autres problèmes de comportement graves. Ce n'est pas pour vous effrayer d'adopter un chien, c'est pour vous informer que vous devez faire vos recherches !
Cherchez un sauvetage qui partage les mêmes valeurs que vous. Le bien-être du chien doit être la priorité numéro un. Associer le chien à la bonne famille est crucial pour un chien heureux et un adoptant heureux.

d. Animaleries
Certains États ont mis en place de nouvelles lois qui interdisent aux animaleries de vendre des chiens d'usines à chiots. Les lois sont censées aider à prévenir les usines à chiots, mais je viens de lire une histoire selon laquelle les usines à chiots s'enregistrent maintenant comme un sauvetage à but non lucratif afin de contourner la loi. Demandez à l'animalerie d'où vient le chiot et faites vos recherches sur le sauvetage qu'ils utilisent pour obtenir leurs chiots.
e. Soyez patient
Je ne connais que trop bien le sentiment, vous décidez qu'il est temps d'adopter un chien et vous voulez le chien aujourd'hui. Mais cela ne fonctionne pas de cette façon, du moins pas si vous suivez toutes les étapes appropriées. 2. Research the Dog(s) You Want to Adopt
If you haven’t asked yourself the important question about what personality type you are and what personality type dog will be a good fit, now is the time to hunker down and figure this out.

Adopting a high-energy dog if you are a low-energy kind of person, you and the dog are going to be very unhappy. Everyone in your family should be involved, your husband, wife, kids and other dogs. Why type of dog is going to fit in with your entire families lifestyle?
a. Searching for dogs online
Once you decide on the energy level, size, and maybe breed of dog that will be your perfect dog, you can start searching online with your chosen rescue or shelter. Pet Adoption Websites have search options that allow you to narrow down your search by shelters near you, by breed, by age and more.
Hopefully the dog that you like has detailed information about his personality so you can make an informed decision. Remember to ask a lot of questions when preparing to meed a dog you want to adopt.
b. Meeting dogs in foster homes
This is my favorite way to adopt a dog. Don’t be afraid to ask to meet several dogs. I realize sometimes this can be difficult when dogs are in foster homes. If you can’t meet them in person, then ask to talk to the foster family on the phone. Take this opportunity to ask all your initial questions before meeting the dog.
In my experience as a foster home, the more questions I answer on the phone, the better prepared the adopters are when they meet us in person. It’s also great that Fetch, WI allows us, as a foster, to write updates for the dogs adoption page. This allows us to document the full personality of each dog, good or bad. I believe in being fully transparent about the dog, this prepares an adopter for everything to expect when they choose our foster dog.
When you do get to meet the dog, spend at least a half an hour with the dog. Ask to take the dog for a walk around the block. Spend time on the floor playing with the dog. And you should perform a personality test on the dog .
c. Meeting dogs at the humane society
Humane Societies and other big shelters can be big and scary for any dog. When you do get to see the dog you are interested in, ask to be able to spend some time with the dog in a quiet room. Spend at least a half an hour with the dog. Ask to take the dog for a walk around the block. Spend time on the floor playing with the dog. And you should perform a personality test on the dog even if the shelter already said they did.
Don’t settle for adopting a dog just because you feel sorry for him. I can’t express enough the importance of choosing the right dog that fits your personality and lifestyle.
3. Prepare your home for a new dog
While you are searching for a dog, you can start puppy proofing your home si besoin. I would hold off on buying food, crate or collar until you know which dog you are adopting. Some dogs may have a special diet and size matters when it comes to crate and collars.
As soon as you have decided on which dog you will be adopting, then you need to go shopping BEFORE you bring him home. You will need some supplies to get started, including food, collar, leash, a name tag, crate, and more. Head over to our Amazon page to see all of the items I recommend.
Do not bring your dog to the pet store on the way home. The dog is going to be stressed enough as it is, he needs time to decompress and not have to worry about meeting new people or dogs.
4. Bring your dog home
Ouais! It’s finally the day you get to bring home your new dog! Congratulations, it’s so exciting to start a new life with a new dog. Dogs will bring so much unconditional love into your life, you’ll wonder how you ever survived without a dog.
